Name Rhoda Viola Cook Nickname Viola Born 3 Dec 1883 Alabama [1, 2] - It is likely that Viola did not know exactly what year she was born. Although most records created in her life indicate that she was born in 1880 it is highly unlikely since her brother, Daniel, was born 12 June 1880. Because she is listed in the census taken 1 June 1885, we know she was born before that date. Even with the discrepancies in that enumeration, she was already born. She is listed as 1 year old and if the unknown informant was guessing at ages, a baby or toddler would have been an easier guess than an older child so her age may be more accurate than the other household members. Since she was born in December, if the question was answered correctly, she had turned 1 year old in 1884, indicating a birth year of 1883.

Father James C. Cook
b. Sep 1821, North Carolina
d. 21 Mar 1901, Washington County, Florida (Age ~ 79 years)Mother Harriet Emily Harris
b. 7 Feb 1858, Alabama
d. 27 Jul 1930, Vernon, Washington County, Florida (Age 72 years)Married Between 1871 and 1875 - Emily’s brother, Ezekial, is living in the household of James C. & Elizabeth Cook in 1870, and Elizabeth is listed as the head of household rather than James. His Confederate pension states that he had suffered diphtheria and “wounded by being struck on the head with a ball.” If James was physically impaired, Ezekial may have been there to help the family with farming chores. Emily and her mother were living just a few farms from James & Elizabeth. No marriage record has been found for James and Emily or a divorce for him and Elizabeth. It is likely that they were never legally married. Emily’s widow’s pension of 1908 says they were married in Crenshaw County, Alabama in 1871, she did not remember the date. The 1927 application she lists about 10 January and no year. Elwood was born c. 1875 or 1876. The 1880 census only shows one child: Elbert, age 5, who is most likely Elwood.
