Andy Fletcher Earwood was born 12 April 1922, Commerce, Hunt County, Texas,[1] and died 13 February 2017, Yorba Linda, Orange County, California.[2] He was the last of thirteen children born to John Arch Earwood and Sarah Artimincy Sorrell.[3] He married Maria Vierti, 30 December 1946, Napoli, Italy.[4] She was born 2 January 1924, San Lorenzo, Napoli, Italy, to Francesco Vierti and Pasqualina Arnese, and died 13 August 2018.[5]

Andy was born in the Horton community near the east Texas town of Commerce. By 1930, the family had moved to west Texas, near Tahoka, where his father died in 1935.[6] Andy and his brother Roy were the only children still living with their mother when she relocated to Los Angeles, California before 1940.[7] Andy married Dorothy Stopher, 2 October 1941, Yuma County, Arizona. It was a short marriage that ended in divorce.[8]

Andy was inducted into the Army 21 April 1943 in Los Angeles. He served in the 3270th Ordnance Base Depot Company as a heavy truck driver. He arrived in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO) on 27 November 1944 and left there on 23 January 1947. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.[9]

While he was stationed in Italy, a friend of his set him up on a blind date. When he arrived and saw Mary, he pointed at her and said she was the one he wanted! She did not speak English but they were able to get to know each other and fall in love.[10] They were married 30 December 1946, in Naples, Italy.[11]

Maria Vierti was born 2 January 1924, in San Lorenzo, Napoli, Italy, daughter of Francesco Vierti and Pasqualina Arnese.[12] Soon after their marriage, the Army sent Andy home. His Italian “war bride” followed a few weeks later. She traveled on the USAT General C.C. Ballou, departing Leghorn, Italy, 8 March 1947, and arrived New York City, 20 March 1947.[13] From there, she rode a train to West Texas and someone told her to watch out for those cowboys and she was afraid. When she arrived Andy, always the jokester, came up behind her and put his hands over her eyes, she thought one of those cowboys had her! The newlyweds lived in Tahoka for three or four months before moving to California.[14] Maria became a naturalized citizen on 13 November 1953.[15]

Andy and Mary were married for seventy years before his death on 13 February 2017.[16] He faithfully took her to Italy to visit her family on a regular basis. They raised two children in California and he retired from Goodyear Tires. Mary died 13 August 2018. They are buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, Los Angeles County, California.[17]
